Welsh Conservatives have described the Government's refusal to accept the findings of a top level report on pensions as "deplorable".

Commenting on a call by the Parliamentary Ombudsman Ann Abraham for the Government to compensate people – including former Allied Steel and Wire workers from Cardiff – who lost all or part of their company pensions, the leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the National Assembly Nick Bourne AM said: “It is extraordinary that the Government has failed to accept the Ombudsman’s report.

“Ann Abraham found a clear case for maladministration and recommended that the Government should meet the cost of lost occupational pension schemes.

“It is a real slap in the face for the Ombudsman system for the Government to reject these independent findings.

“We are all too aware of the immense impact of this issue in Wales because of the magnificent fight staged by the former ASW workers.

“We fully support them and their continued campaign for pensions justice

“ASW workers have endured years of pain and uncertainty through no fault of their own.

“The Conservative Party will do everything possible to make sure their plight is not forgotten by the Labour Government – either here in Cardiff or at Westminster.”
