Strengthening families to reduce inequality

Michael Gove, the Shadow Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, has promised to support stable family structures in order to increase equality and opportunity.

He stressed that a secure start in life in a stable family environment is the “best guarantee of maximising opportunity” – and he said:

“Helping families under pressure, especially those under economic pressure, to commit and stay committed, is one of the most effective anti-poverty, pro-opportunity, pro-equality steps one could take.”

He outlined a series of plans to support families, including a universal health visitor service, ending the couple penalty in the tax system, and introducing flexible parental leave.

And he stressed that the social policy of a Conservative Government will be driven by “the need to see everything through the prism of stronger, healthier, relationships.”
