David Cameron has promised that we will do everything possible to help the Government protect our financial security.

In an unscheduled speech to Conference, he stressed that we cannot allow the “political wrangling” that led to the bail-out bill being rejected in America to happen here.

And he pledged to put aside party differences aside to bring reassurance to people concerned about their savings, pensions and jobs:

"This is a moment when democracies are being tested - we need to show that they can deal with crisis and difficulties like this one."

David said three urgent measures were necessary:

  • Passing legislation to allow the Bank of England to rescue failihng banks – and David promised to drop our objection over who pulls the trigger – the Bank of England or the FSA - to allow the bill to pass smoothly
  • Protecting people’s deposits – and he promised our full support for this legislation
  • Breaking the self-fulfilling cycle that is hurting banks’ ability to lend, by addressing the 'marking to market' accounting regulation

He ended by stressing, "In Britain, we are all in this together. In Britain, let’s stick together, and together we’ll find a way through.”
