Andrew Mitchell, the Shadow International Development Secretary, has stressed the current economic crisis makes an Independent Aid Watchdog more vital than ever.

He warned that the global downturn is hitting developing countries hard, and said, “This is a time to reaffirm our commitment to the poorest people in the world, not abandon it.”

This week sees a conference in London on the impact of the economic downturn on developing countries, and Andrew stressed that as taxpayers tighten their belt, it is vital that every pound of aid is effective.

“Douglas Alexander (Labour's International Development Secretary) should adopt our proposal to set up an Independent Aid Watchdog to provide truly rigorous evaluation of the impact and effectiveness of British aid."
