David was elected as the Member of Parliament for Macclesfield in May 2010. After the general election, David was elected to the influential Treasury Select Committee and served on the Committee until his appointment as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Damian Green MP, the Minister for Immigration in November 2010.
David is also the Co-Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Mountaineering and Vice Chair of the APPG on National Parks, as well as being a member of several other APPGs, including those on China, Pharmaceuticals and Financial Education for Young People.
David is a hard working constituency MP for Macclesfield. He is committed to serving every constituent regardless of their political views and holds regular advice surgeries across the constituency. David is actively working to strengthen the local economy, revitalise Macclesfield town centre, tackle traffic congestion in Poynton and keep health care local at Macclesfield Hospital. He is also committed to safeguarding village life and conserving the area's beautiful countryside. David supports the important work of many community groups in Macclesfield, Bollington, Disley, Poynton, Prestbury and the surrounding villages.
Before his election to Parliament, David spent most of his career in business and worked as a senior executive in major companies including: Asda (where he ran the Home Shopping and E-Commerce businesses) and PepsiCo International, and then latterly, Halifax General Insurance and Barclays.
He has also worked as a Special Advisor (1994-96) in the last Conservative Government at the Treasury, the Cabinet Office and the Ministry of Agriculture. During this time, David helped shape the Budget and initiate the first ever White Paper for rural England. He was also a Parliamentary Candidate in St Albans in 1997.
Born in 1961, David was educated at the Priory School, Lewes, East Sussex. He later studied at the London School of Economics and Harvard Business School.
David enjoys an active family life with his wife Rachel, a physiotherapist, and their four children - two boys and two girls. Outside politics, David spends time in the Peak District, rock climbing on local crags and enjoying family walks. He is a keen mountaineer, and has climbed in mountain ranges throughout the world, and also enjoys fishing and birdwatching.
